OpenDNS no longer recommended

Thanks to a brief post at Daring Fireball I think I know why I’m having to solve captchas to complete Google searches now and then. I’ve been using OpenDNS for quite a while as it is more reliable than my ISP’s DNS servers (boo, Telus, bad DNS!). Apparently OpenDNS redirects queries to www.google.com through its internal servers in a misguided attempt to protect its users from branded search results, and there appears to be no way to turn this off in the user settings. I’ve always been a bit leery of OpenDNS’s “enhancements” to DNS and this just tipped the balance all the way over. From now on I’m only using it when Telus’ servers are down.

[Update: I haven't had any problems with Google searches in the month since I stopped using OpenDNS.]
